“Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of joy, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.”
With the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea starting in just a few days, it is a good time to reflect on the spirit and meaning of the Olympics, which after reading the Olympic philosophy above, is not so different than that of International Student Exchange.
While we gather to watch this international competition and marvel at the abilities and indomitable spirit of the athletes, we can compare it to the bravery and dedication of:
- Students who leave their home countries to explore the world and themselves
- Host Families who welcome foreign students into the fold of their lives & hearts
- Schools who understand & embrace the value of a multi-cultural student body
So, as we tune in and watch the XXIII Olympic games, we can take pride that we are also participating in program that is an age-old force for peace with the same universal values.
