Host Family Pre-Arrival Orientation - Avoiding Problems and Developing Understanding

  • Admitting that there will be difficult periods will lessen the severity of disappointments and frustrations.

  • Create a channel of communication (perhaps informal weekly talks) starting during the initial “honeymoon period,” where everyone can talk about what’s on their mind.

  • Expect your student to struggle at times with the challenge of adjusting to a new culture and your family’s lifestyle and rules.

  • Be on the lookout for small tensions and unspoken rules.

  • Remember that part of your student’s growth is in learning to avoid problems and deal with those that occur.  While they may seem mature, they have less life experience than you do, and rely on you for understanding, clear limits and guidelines.
